M2M explained simply
M2M stands for machine to machine. The idea is simple: a piece of equipment sends its data to another system, without anyone having to read it and copy it down. An installation generally has four elements. A sensor measures a value, such as a temperature or a number of cycles. A gateway collects these measurements and sends them on. A platform records them and applies your rules. A dashboard presents them to you on a screen, phone or computer.
Practical uses for an SME
M2M is not reserved for large factories. It can meet very ordinary needs, as long as you start from a precise question.
- Monitor the temperature of a cold room and get notified when it drifts
- Track a workshop's energy consumption, machine by machine
- Know the level of a tank without travelling to it
- Count the parts produced and a machine's downtime
- Get an alert when a machine approaches a maintenance threshold you have set
Start from the machines you already have
Changing your equipment is not always necessary. Some machines can already communicate, while others can take an external sensor. We start by examining your equipment, your network and the constraints of your site, such as distance, dust or heat. We then tell you what seems feasible to us and what does not.
The most cautious approach is to begin with a small trial on a single piece of equipment. This way you see whether the data really helps you decide before going further.
Useful alerts, not noise
An alert only has value if someone knows what to do with it. So we define the thresholds, the recipients and the expected action with you. For maintenance, the goal remains modest and realistic: to flag a drift, an overrun or a running-hours count that has been reached, so that your technician can step in. The recorded history then helps them understand what happened. These alerts add to your usual checks and do not replace them.
Connecting the data to your software
Once collected, the data can go further than a screen: it can feed your production tracking, trigger a service request or update a stock level, through an API or exchange files. Each installation depends on your site and your machines. Hardware and development are therefore studied case by case, and we prepare a quote for your project.
